Floor and DecorSince purchasing our first home over six years ago, my husband and I have completely remodeled almost every room in the house.  Now you might think that we must be some sort of handymen extraordinaire, but actually that couldn't be further from the truth.

While I consider myself a very handy gal, I definitely couldn't do any sort of major renovation on my own and my husband, bless his heart, is not very handy at all.  So how were we able to completely remodel our master bathroom for a fraction of the price quoted to us by several reputable contractors?  Keep reading to see for yourself!

I loved the layout of our home from the moment I laid eyes on it.  It's built wide and airy and doesn't have a million tiny rooms chopped into bits.  I like a big home to look big and a bunch of walls staring back at me just ain't that pretty, in my opinion.  Two rooms in particular melted my heart when we first took a tour of our home...the kitchen and the master bathroom.  Both were large and spacious and had so much potential, but were falling WAY short.

When my husband and I decided to tackle the master bathroom, we went all the way.  Where there was carpet, we wanted tile.  Where there was a fan, we wanted a chandelier, where there was wallpaper, we wanted paint.  As you can see, we basically left no stone unturned and ended up replacing almost every single thing in this room.  Here's the before pictures, so you can see for yourself what we were dealing with here:  Bye, bye gold lacquer, frightful carpet and outdated wallpaper!

Master Bathroom Before

Since this was the first room my husband and I renovated, we did the usual thing and started calling up several reputable remodeling companies in the area.  These people came out and gave us a free estimate, told us what they recommended and then left us with our eyes bulging.  Most every quote we received was to the tune of over $15,000!  YIKES!  :wow:

My husband and I are known for our frugality and there was no way we were going to spend $15,000 to renovate our master bathroom.  That's when we both learned something extremely important...doing it yourself doesn't necessarily mean that you have to physically do the work yourself, but it does mean that you have to do everything else yourself.

Even though my husband and I didn't hammer one nail or lay one piece of tile, we were able to completely overhaul the master bathroom of our home for around $5,000.  First step...find all of the supplies you'll need and purchase them yourself from an affordable location, such as Floor and Decor.

Floor and Decor is a great place to go for a variety of low price flooring options like porcelain, ceramic, stone, tile, wood, and laminate.  They have one of the largest selections of floor decor in Houston and are even there to lend a hand with free design services.  This can be an invaluable tool when 100% of the responsibility of your home renovation is lying squarely on your shoulders.

Just strolling through the huge showroom at Floor and Decor will give you plenty of inspiration on how best to renovate your own special space.  Because they're known for having the best selection in tiles, don't be surprised if you just happen to find the perfect tile for your renovation at Floor and Decor.

Once we found all of the supplies necessary, we started combing the land for skilled craftsmen to tackle EACH JOB of our renovation.  This was definitely the least expensive way to go.  For instance, we searched far and wide to find one company to remove the wallpaper and paint our entire bathroom.  Next, we found a plumber to install all of our new fixtures in both sinks, the shower and the Jacuzzi tub.  Then, we found a contractor specializing in tile who was able to take the flooring we purchased and lay the floors and the tile in the shower.

Finally, I installed the light fixtures and chandelier myself and we found one final soul to install our new glass shower enclosure.  That's it!  We saved over $10,000 by remodeling our bathroom with specialized people we selected for each and every job.  The design for our master bath was mine, and it was up to us to try and get everyone in on the vision.  It was a lot of hard work, but the money we saved and the results we see everyday in our new bathroom were definitely worth it!
