Goodnight SweetheartValentine's Day is around the corner, and if you're anything like my husband, you might think this day is just a commercial holiday and has nothing to do with actual love.  Well, if you'd like to give your sweetheart a gift that helps you both get back to your roots as a couple and reconnect with each other, then keep reading!

Goodnight Sweetheart has developed a simple card game for couples that helps you focus on the positive things in your relationship and why you both fell in love with each other.  It also takes only a few minutes to play, so as to fit into even the busiest couple's schedule.

I reviewed the Couple's Edition card game from Goodnight Sweetheart, which retails for $17.95, and the Night Cap Notes, which retails for $3.99.

The first thing that impressed me about the Goodnight Sweetheart Couple's Edition game was the beautiful packaging it came in.  This burgundy and gold box was very elegant looking even came adorned with a matching ribbon tied in a bow.  If you plan on giving this as a gift, you definitely won't have to worry about wrapping this present beforehand.  It will also look nice on your nightstand too!

Goodnight Sweetheart Couple's Edition Card Game

Next, I really liked how simple and easy it was to play the Couple's Edition game.  All you needed was your spouse or loved one and a quiet, kid-free place.  This would be perfect for playing in the bedroom or in front of the fire on a cold winter's night.  Then, choose whether or not to play the long version or the short version of the game.  The long version takes only about 20 minutes while the short version can be played in as little as 2 minutes.

There are four categories of cards: Sharing, Wild, Sweetheart and Action.  I've listed an example of each, so that you can get a feel for what kind of questions and activities are on each kind of card.

  • Sharing Card - "What area of the playground was your favorite in elementary school?"
  • Sweetheart Card - "What one 'look' do you just LOVE that I've given you?"
  • Action Card - "Blow me a kiss...Give me a wink!"
  • Wild Card - "KISS ME anywhere you like for 15 seconds (waist up) OR... Pick three different places on my body to kiss and do so for 5 seconds each."

I was a little unclear about how to play the long version, based on the instructions, for you are supposed to "separate the Sharing Cards into a pile within reach", but then they are never mentioned again.  Personally, my husband and I made up our own rules and just shuffled all of the cards and dealt each other twelve of them.

Take turns reading each of them out loud to your partner and listening to what their response is.  I definitely learned a few things about Michael that I didn't know before...and I thought by this point in our relationship, I knew everything!

Goodnight Sweetheart Couple's Edition Card Game

The Couple's Edition game was great for we were really communicating together again without any interruptions and were having a great time.  We laughed and joked and probably drug the game out longer than intended, but that was the whole point in a way.  This game helped us have some real quality time as a couple and reconnect with each other as Melissa and Michael, instead of just Mommy and Daddy.  If you are really pressed for time or want to make this game a nightly ritual, then just complete one card per day and get back to your relationship's roots.

I also have a tip for playing the Couple's Edition game if you are looking for a medium length version.  Pick just one card from each category and have each person perform them in the following order:  Sharing, Sweetheart, Action and Wild.  Things may take off from there...I'm just saying!  :)

Goodnight Sweetheart Night Cap Notes

The Night Cap Notes are a nice way to show that special person in your life how much you love them.  These cards have a beginning prompt, which you then complete with your own personal message.  Because there are only 10 of these cards in a pack, I thought the Night Cap Notes were a little expensive, but I do like the meaning behind them.  It is important to focus on your relationship everyday and not just on the big, romantic holidays.  With Goodnight Sweetheart Couple's Edition and Night Cap Notes, you can easily make every night a good night!
