Toys That Instill a Love of Science and Technology Just for Girls

5/5 - (1 vote)

Have you ever noticed that most toys on the market today which are geared toward science and technology are what I would call "for boys"?  Construction sets frequently allow for building bridges and skyscrapers and anything electronic usually revolves around cars and robots.

No wonder only 15% of female first-year college students intend to major in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and less than 11% of engineers are women.  Personally, science has always been a love of mine and since I have a Bachelors of Science in Genetics and am also the mother to a super smart little 4-year-old girl, I pass along my love of the subject to my daughter every chance I get.

That's why I was thrilled to learn of the Roominate line of toys.  These toys are designed to bring STEM to little girls in a way that's actually enjoyable FOR THEM.  Just think of how fun it would be to actually design and build your own dollhouse from the ground up?

I reviewed The Original Roominate Kit from Maykah Inc., which retails for $59.00.

The original DIY wired dollhouse building kit, as featured on Kickstarter, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Wired, and many more!  Designed by Alice and Bettina, two female engineers on a mission to increase the number of women engineers, Roominate gives early exposure to hands-on building and circuits! Roominate brings together creativity, engineering, and most importantly, FUN!

Roominate is a stackable, attachable and customizable miniature room with working circuits that you build yourself.  Good luck tearing your daughter (or son!) away after getting started (or even hours after)… check out you + roominate to see what kids have been making.  Each Original Roominate Kit contains:

  • 4 wall/floor panels (2 9"x6" and 2 6"x6" panels)
  • 24 modular furniture building pieces (6 unique shapes)
  • 16 connectors
  • 1 complete circuit: battery pack + motor + switch (requires 2 AAA batteries, not included)
  • decorations ~ stickers, colored paper, metallic tape, felt

All of their products meet the American Society for Testing and Materials toy safety specifications (ASTM F963) and are recommended for ages 6 years old and up.

Although my daughter is too young yet to be able to create her own Roominate masterpiece, I'm thrilled that Riley now has a toy that provides both an outlet and an inspiration for her scientific endeavors.  Creating a dollhouse of her own making takes plenty of ingenuity and skill, but does so in a manner that's enjoyable for her.  If you have a daughter and would like to encourage her to excel in the STEM related subjects too, be sure to shop the selection of Roominate toys today.

Disclosure:  I received The Original Roominate Kit to facilitate my review.  No other compensation was received. This product review is based on my own personal experiences and is completely honest and objective.
