The Best Tailgating Gear for Football Season

5/5 - (3 votes)

Football season is in full swing and it's the best time of year for tailgating. The weather is mild -- if not still warm in parts of the country -- and spirits are high as teams haven't had a chance to lose their grip on the championship game.

Tickets to the game are pricey enough without the added cost of a pre-game party. That doesn't mean you should forego one of America's favorite pastimes, however, so consider the following ways to save on essential tailgating gear.

Gear

No matter how awesome that jersey looks, you should never buy game gear at the stadium. Instead, look online for deals from such authentic apparel providers as the NFL Shop. Otherwise, buy generic team tees from Target or Walmart to show your support without breaking the bank. And whatever you do, do NOT leave home without the giant, inflatable football player. No true fan would!

Grill

Whether you're happy lugging a full grill to the game or prefer a portable setup, a grill is an absolute must-have for any tailgater. If you don't yet have this staple, check out this list of recommendations from CBS Atlanta. After all, there's no truer authority on the subject of barbecue than the South.

Food

Potluck. Buy in bulk. Shamelessly freeload off everyone else. These are several tried-and-true ways to save on the cost of food while tailgating. However, you can also skip the parking lot and head to a local sports bar. Many establishments offer specials on game day, plus you might be able to score a free appetizer when you sign up for a restaurant's email club. Hit up MrFreeStuff.com for available offers.

Chairs, Coolers & Tables

Tailgating with friends will likely give you access to the necessary items -- coolers, chairs and tables should be in abundant supply. Hold off until later in the football season if you're looking to beef up your personal game-day arsenal to avoid inflated prices. Come November, for example, grills and camp gear will be deeply discounted since they're out of season.

Fuel

Gas prices are on the rise (again), so fuel is yet another expense associated with taking in the big game. In addition to splitting the cost of fuel with your carpooling friends, you can get discounted fuel at select supermarkets. Just join their loyalty program and earn points as you purchase groceries. Consult this list of programs to determine the one that's best for you.

Refreshments

There's nothing more unsatisfying than paying $10 for a 12 oz. cup of flat domestic draft. While you might prefer smuggling your favorite beverage into the game, stadium security is pretty militant these days. The most inexpensive option is to avoid drinks altogether, but that's no fun! Instead, enjoy your favorite brew at the pre-game party and sober up with the biggest soda money can buy.

Parking

Cut down on the cost of a parking spot by carpooling with friends and splitting the expense. Otherwise, host an at-home tailgate party by setting up a flat screen in your garage where you can recreate the parking lot scene for much, much less. Plus, who wants to deal with post-game traffic anyway?
