The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship will award you a $30,000 stipend to complete an intensive master's degree program from one of fourteen participating universities. The purpose of this fellowship is to recruit, prepare and retail wonderful teachers for the students and schools who need them most.
I actually attained my teaching certification through a similar program. Since I graduated from college with a Bachelor's degree in Genetics, all I needed in order to become a Science teacher was the money to go back to school for one year and obtain my teaching certification. I was actually awarded almost $18,000 to attend LeTourneau University and I then taught at a Title I school for the next 5 years in order to receive the stipend. It was a great experience and also helped me to give back to my community in the process. I absolutely LOVED teaching and the feeling that I was making a change in children's lives for the better.
In order to qualify for the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship, you must
- Have completed an undergraduate degree in a STEM field by June 2011.
- Have graduated with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the program and its goals.
You will then be required to do the following:
- Complete a field-based master’s degree in teacher education.
- Commit to teach for at least three years in a high-need school.
- Receive intensive support and mentoring in the classroom.
That's it! Pretty good deal, huh?
