Eating Disorders at CampMore than 10 million American children attend a camp each summer. Because these children often spend weeks – and sometimes months – away from parental supervision, Eating Recovery Center, an international center for eating disorders recovery, urges parents to be aware of summer camp triggers that may contribute to the development of an eating disorder in their camp-going children.

“Every year, Eating Recovery Center sees many young patients who cite summer camp as the place where their disordered eating behaviors either began or intensified,” said Jamie Manwaring, PhD, primary therapist at Eating Recovery Center’s Behavioral Hospital for Children and Adolescents. “It is important to recognize that summer camps do not ‘cause’ eating disorders; however, camps’ environments can often be triggering for a child with the genetic or temperamental predisposition for an eating disorder.”

The onset of puberty, typically occurring between the ages of 10 and 14 for girls and 12 and 16 for boys, is one of the two most common times when eating disorders develop. Children in this age range who have a family history of eating disorders, who have previously engaged in disordered eating or who have highly sensitive, perfectionistic temperaments may be more likely to be triggered by camp activities or situations.

Battle of the BulgeAs many moms strive to set the best example for their kids, a new survey from Reader's Digest and Humana reveals that few Americans are making the right choices when it comes to living healthy lifestyles. Despite our best efforts to make healthy decisions, the survey of 1,000 Americans polled consumers on their health and well being and showed that many Americans are continuing to compromise their health in ways that can lead to chronic disease.

Humana Inc., one of the nation's leading health and well-being companies, and Reader's Digest, one of America's most recognized brands, announced results of a nationwide survey that highlights an intriguing fact about health in America – despite our best intentions, Americans continue to make unhealthy choices.

Football FunniesAfter an excruciating four months, most of us have put aside our lockout gripes and embraced the upcoming NFL season with the usual body-painted passion.  Good news for a worried league, but will a fickle stock market and a sluggish job outlook still keep some folks tuned out?  Tickets prices will remain largely static, but optimizing your viewing experience (both at home, or in the stadium) can still run you a pretty penny.  To help you weed out the best bets, here are eight gadgets that should get you the most bang for your buck:

Cleaver Family If you browse around here for long, you'll find most of the posts are written by me, Melissa, the founder of Mommy Living the Life of Riley.  I started this blog back in February 2010 as a social and creative outlet for myself.  As a brand new stay-at-home mom, I found that I was watching way too much Maury Povich and my brain was rotting in the process.

I longed to do something which would challenge my computer skills and keep my writing skills sharp.  I also wanted to find a way to help supplement my family's income in order to ease the burden on my husband.  I couldn't be happier with the path I've taken and have been blessed to find something that I'm good at and that I thoroughly enjoy.  Who can call it work when you're doing something you love?

I'm a former Science teacher with a bachelor's degree in Genetics from Texas A&M University.  I'm married to my college sweetheart, Michael, and have a snappy, sweet and fiery little girl named Riley.  My best pal and dog of 12 years, Noel, rounds out our family and for once in my life, I feel like the white-picket fence girl I've always aspired to be.

I consider myself a jack of all trades and love knowing a little bit about everything.  I can shop like nobody's business and sniff out a bargain a mile away.  I'm an accomplished saxophone player, karaoke singer and rapper, pool player and bowler.  I love making things with my hands which is why I've dabbled in everything from wood working to scrapbooking, needlecrafts of all kinds and sewing.

Recently, I even became an inventor and both my husband and I have started our own small business together, called MCM Inventions.  Toothpaste 2 Go, the patent-pending invention currently available through Toothpaste2Go.com, allows you to convert your full-sized tube of toothpaste into as many travel-sized tubes as you need, saving both time and money.

I'm a self-taught "webmaster" and am proud to say that I designed this blog myself through painstaking research and plenty of experimentation.  I love learning and hope that I'm able to stay busy and active as long as I live, both physically and mentally.  I'm a firm believer that life is what you make it and that attitude and outlook are everything.

NuMeWhether or not my hair looks good can really affect my outlook and mood for the entire day.  Things just always seem to go better and the day is more enjoyable when you know your hair looks healthy, shiny and stylish.  I use a flat iron on my hair quite frequently since I can never seem to style it very well with just a brush and blow dryer.

Since my hair is particularly fine and straight (and colored), I have to fight the flyaways and the frizz.  I love how a flat iron smoothes my locks, but I've always been wary of using them too much since I know they can damage my hair.  I've heard though, that this isn't the case with a high quality flat iron.

In fact, I've heard that your hair can appear even more shiny and smooth if a high quality flat iron is used instead.  I wanted to put the NuMe Vintage Flat Iron to the test to see if I could rid myself of "bad hair days" for good!

I reviewed the Vintage Flat Iron in Blackfrom NuMe, which retails for $275.00, but is currently on sale for $145.00.
