Discovery Bay GamesI am such a huge fan of scary stories and think that half the fun of camping is listening to the scary stories everyone will try to tell around the campfire late at night.  Unfortunately, the art of storytelling is quickly becoming a lost one, for now we have movies, television shows and video games to do our imagining for us.

Thankfully, Discovery Bay Games has found a fun new way to bring back the classic "scary story" and help us really get the creative juices going at the same time.  I had the chance to review their Spooky Tales game with my husband.  Keep reading to learn much more about the game no camping trip or slumber party should ever be without!

I reviewed the Spooky Tales game from Discovery Bay Games, which retails for $29.99, but is currently on sale for $10.95 with FREE SHIPPING.

The Spooky Tales Interactive Story Telling Game actually includes two games, the Spooky Tales Card Game and the Vampires Rise Group Activity Game, along with a Creepy Sounds Flashlight, rule books and cards for both games and a set of Spooky Tales tokens.  Both games are designed for ages 8 and up and are more fun to play with several people.

As a matter of fact, the Vampire Rise game requires at least 6-8 players and would be perfect for use at a party, camping trip or slumber party.

I will give you a quick overview of the Vampires Rise Group Activity Game, though I didn't actually play this game due to the large amount of people needed to play it.  Basically, this game is one of good versus evil.  Players are villagers, vampires or a seer.  If you are a villager, the object is to kill all of the vampires.

If you are a vampire, the object is to turn all the villagers into your own personal feedbags, and if you are a seer, you get a chance to discover who is a vampire and who is a villager.  This game involves a moderator and a lot of bluffing and role playing on the part of the participants.  The game will continue to be played in rounds consisting of night and day until either the villagers kill the vampires or the vampires kill enough villagers so that there are an equal number of vampires to living villagers.

My husband and I played the Spooky Tales card game together and we both loved it!  I felt just like a kid again trying to concoct some wild, outlandish story to capture the attention of my friends.  This card game involves being dealt various elements of a scary story and then trying to play all of your cards first by weaving these elements into the Spooky Tales' story, in a fun and believable way.

Telling a captivating story on the spot is definitely more difficult than you might think, which is where the strategy and stealing elements come in.  Other players are also trying to play their story element cards at the same time and so are always listening for a way to jump in and steal your role of the storyteller.

My husband and I are both very competitive and sometimes because of this, our stories weren't very good because we were more concerned with actually getting rid of our cards, but once we calmed down and focused more on the story and less on winning, we came up with some real doozies!

Want some examples?  How about the story of a two-headed pig with only one heart which became possessed with the spirit of a cave-dwelling cannibal?  Of course, we also had a laugh riot over the tale of a haunted strip club with mutant zombie strippers trying to decapitate their patrons!

That's the genius behind the Spooky Tales game...it provides just enough structure and ideas to let your group's creativity go wild.  My husband and I couldn't stop laughing and scrambling for the next big idea, all at the same time!

If you want a highly social game which will definitely have everyone using their imaginations and quick wit, then I wholeheartedly recommend Spooky Tales from Discovery Bay Games.  If I would have had this game back when I was a kid, there wouldn't have been a slumber party safe from playing Spooky Tales all night long!
