Many Americans are finding themselves in a dire situation these days. Their health has seriously declined due to poor nutritional choices and little to no daily exercise. For the first time in history, we are facing surging levels of obesity and Type II diabetes in both adults and children.

In order to battle this overall decline in our nation's health, Walmart has developed a healthy living initiative aimed at improving the choices we make in regards to physical fitness and nutrition. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have generously sponsored over $9.5 million dollars in grants to a variety of organizations, like Action for Healthy Kids.

The funding will support nutrition education programs, provide classes focused on learning how to cook and shop for healthier foods on a budget and provide live cooking demonstrations in communities nationwide. Award-winning nutritionist and author, Dr. Ro Brock, has partnered with Walmart on their healthy living initiative and will be contributing her knowledge and expertise to help Americans develop better, more nutritious eating habits.

Personally, I am thrilled to learn that Walmart has donated $1.5 million to the Action for Healthy Kids organization. As a former teacher, I was appalled to see what prepackaged and unhealthy food choices were being made available in our school cafeterias. The goal of Action for Healthy Kids is to help increase access to healthy food and improve nutritional education at 400 schools nationwide. This program expects to increase access to nutritional programs to 160,000 school-age children.

My family is very concerned about the overall decline of our nation's health and because of this, we strive to get as much fresh air and exercise as possible. My husband and I feel that if we can model an active lifestyle for our daughter and provide her with fresh, healthy food choices, that she will grow up to make responsible decisions for herself as an adult.

What have you done or are planning to do in order to get your family and/or community to lead a healthier lifestyle?
