Parent & Child Magazine 100 Greatest Books for KidsI think every parent understands how important it is to read to a child.  Reading teaches critical language development and social skills, as well as helps children achieve and succeed in school.  But the best part is how reading thoroughly enriches a child's life by opening the door to a brand new world every time they open the cover of a book.

Before becoming a mom, I must admit that I wasn't very knowledgeable when it came to children's literature,  but since reading to Riley every day for the last three years, I've learned a lot along the way.  Scholastic and Parent & Child have accepted a huge undertaking...to name the greatest 100 children's books of all time!

A panel of child development and literary experts joined forces with a few experienced parents (including ME!) to come up with the esteemed books on this list.  I carefully thought about the books Riley and I enjoyed together and selected several which I thought were countdown-worthy.  I have no idea which books actually made the list and will be anxiously awaiting the results right along with you!  I can tell you though, that one of the selections I recommended is in the very first reveal of books 91-100!

UPDATE: This week, books 91-100 will be revealed in the Top 100 Greatest Books for Kids countdown!

Each week, 10 more books will be revealed, until we reach the top 10.  Then, each of those will be revealed one at a time.  This should prove to be an exciting and informative time which will definitely help me find new, quality reading material for Riley.  Scholastic and Parent & Child magazine also have plenty of prizes and goodies to give away throughout the entire countdown, so make sure to visit frequently for your chances to win!

Of course, you will also be able to keep up with all of the happenings via Twitter and Facebook.  I'll be sure to keep everyone in the loop through my own social media sites, but if you'd like to follow along with the official discussions and reveals on Twitter, be sure to follow @PARENTandCHILD  and use the #100books hashtag.  On Facebook, just tune in to the special album here:  http://on.fb.me/skJ972 for the full scoop!

Now it's YOUR turn!

Before you've seen any of the books that made the Top 100 Greatest Books for Kids list, which books do you think should have definitely made the list?

Which authors do you think will make the top 10?

I'm so curious to see if perhaps we've picked some of the same books, so keep those comments coming!  :big grin:

Disclosure: I received no compensation whatsoever for posting this information or participating in the countdown itself.  This post is based on my own personal experiences and is completely honest and objective.

I'm a former 7th grade Science teacher turned stay-at-home mom that lives in Houston, Texas. I am married to my college sweetheart and have a beautiful daughter named Riley, who definitely keeps me on my toes! I am also involved in starting a small business which would both manufacture and sell an invention that I've patented, called Toothpaste 2 Go. I love interacting with my readers and hope to learn as much about you as you learn about me!
